Introduction

The Children’s Home is a non-profit social welfare organization dedicated to providing care for orphans and abandoned, underprivileged and needy children in Nepal.

For many, Nepal is a land of dreams, of temples and of Himalayan expeditions, of ancient cities and of picturesque villages, the birthplace of Buddha and home to the Yeti. However, this land of cultural diversity and rich tradition is also one of the poorest countries in the world, and for much of its population, daily life is anything but a dream. More than half of its people live below the poverty line. Children are particularly vulnerable, and many are denied the most basic essentials. It is in this context that the Children’s Home; a non-profit NGO was founded in 1989 with the objective of providing care and facilities to orphans, abandoned, underprivileged and needy children in Nepal.

The Children’s Home took in 18 children in 1989, and now cares for 428 children. With limited resources it has been able to provide a decent home to abandoned and needy children, offering them family life, medical care, education, vocational training, and hope for the future. The Children’s Home currently has two facilities, a home for girls in rented premises in Kathmandu, and a permanent home for boys in Mahendranagar in premises owned by the organization. Several associated projects have already been implemented in Mahendranagar, such as a crop cultivation project on land belonging to the organization, an animal farm providing meat, poultry and milk products for the Home and for sale in the local market, a school for the children of the Home and the local community, and a computer training program for the older children.

The Children’s Home hopes to continue to expand and improve its facilities, notably by purchasing land in the Kathmandu Valley in order to construct a permanent girl’s orphanage which would allow the Home to take in more needy girls. The second phase of this project would involve establishing a school with high educational standards (Government sponsored schools are poorly run and standards are low) for the children of the Home as well as for other needy children. The final phase of the project calls for the construction of a guesthouse on the premises so that donors or sponsors may stay with the children, participate in their activities, and verify for themselves how funds are being used.

Goals

The goals of the Children’s Home are to provide the children in its care with:
1. Food and housing in a secure and nurturing home environment;
2. Adequate medical care and training in health and sanitation;
3. Quality education
4. Job skill training so that the children will become productive and self-supporting adults
In addition, the Children’s Home provides scholarships to other poor and underprivileged children.

Facilities

Head Office, Kathmandu

The Home in Kathmandu cares for girls, and serves as the head office for contacts with INGOs, NGOs, and government offices and with individuals, and for developing, submitting and following up on project proposals, and fund-raising.

AMOR Children’s Home, Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur District, Far Western Nepal

This second facility was established in 1995 in order to provide the children with a permanent home of their own. A large piece of land was bought and a home built in one of the least developed areas of Nepal. The location was chosen as the land costs and living expenses are lower and thus it was possible to provide the necessary space for recreational activities, future development projects, job skill training and income generating activities. In addition, the environment is better than in the urban area of Kathmandu, and the organization is contributing to the social development of a poor section of the country. The AMOR Children’s Home cares for 62 boys between the ages of 4 and 18. Girls have not been sent to Mahendranagar as the home is only seven kilometres from the Indian border, and it is feared that the girls would be the targets of traffickers who lure Nepali girls to Indian brothels.

A crop cultivation project has been started in Mahendranagar on 2.5 bighas (1,77,970 Square.Feet) of land belonging to the organization, growing rice, wheat, lentils and mustard seeds, and fruit trees will soon be planted. An animal farm has also been created in order to provide the children with fresh milk, meat and poultry products.

The Children’s Home has also opened a school for the children of the Home and the local community, and has initiated a computer-training project to provide the children with marketable skills.

Management and Staff

A seven member executive committee manages the Children’s Home. The Home in Kathmandu is staffed by 11 people and the Home in Mahendranagar by 12, under the direction of the President/Director.

Future Projects

Future projects of the Children’s Home include the aforementioned construction of a permanent girl's home in Kathmandu, expanding the educational facilities in both Homes, developing other job training projects, in particular a tailoring training project for the girls in Kathmandu and a leather production training project.

How you can help the Children’s Home

The Children’s Home is a small organization with big goals and high ideals. It receives no financial support from the Nepalese Government and is not affiliated with any political organizations. It relies solely on private donations, occasional assistance from NGOs and its own fund-raising activities.  In order for the Children’s Home to expand and reach out to more children, it needs your generous support. You may help in any of the following ways.

1. Full sponsorship of a child or children ($ 810 per year per child). The Children’s Home will send you a photo, a brief history, and an annual report on your child, with whom you may correspond directly.

2. Educational sponsorship of a child or children ($ 350 per year per child). Your sponsorship will provide for a child’s schooling and educational materials. You will receive a photo and information about the child, as well as an annual report.

3. Donation to the general fund in any amount. The general fund provides food, clothing, shelter, medical and dental care, legal services, and quality education to the children.

4. Assist in providing the children with job skill training, help with income generating activities, or participate in construction of the new home and school in Kathmandu or of additional facilities in Mahendranagar.
